How do I begin to review one of the greatest, most moving novels I have read. When I found this book at my local library, the topic interested me. This great author has penned many non-fiction books, but few fiction. I usually write a book review within a few hours of completing it’s reading. This novel was different. I savored it from beginning to end, engulfed in the picturesque descriptions of each scene, and had to step away for a couple days to digest it’s content.
Ben, one of two main characters, travels to China, hoping his old friend, Quan, will assist his efforts to begin a new company. Instead, he discovers Quan living in poverty as a locksmith. Quan, thrilled to have his Harvard classmate visiting him, is disappointed to hear of Ben’s rejection of his faith in Jesus, which he once held dear.
As his visit progresses, he learns that Quan is a minister, as his father and mother, of an underground church in China. When persecution escalates, Ben has to decide which path he will continue his walk, and how willing he is to pay the price of whole heartedly following Christ.
The author, throughout the novel, peeled back Heaven, and allowed the reader to hear the conversations between the angels and The King. The perspective of God’s view on martyrdom, based on Scripture, was a dimension that has placed this novel in the category of classic.
Safely Home humbled me, considering how I view the little inconveniences of this life as life changing. It caused me to question how deeply my faith would grow if placed in the same persecution as Quan. It made me wonder how the present day church would thrive if placed on the threshing floor of persecution.
I highly recommend this book. Check it out at your library, purchase it at your favorite book store, and buy a few copies to give to friends. It will ignite a fresh fire into your life!
