“Laura’s heart cried out deep inside her, for she wished so much that Jenny could acknowledge her for who she was. She longed to hear the words ‘I love you, Mama’ on her child’s lips.”
Romance and suspense come alive in this uplifting Christian novel set in the South in the 1870s.
Shadowed by majestic oaks on the banks of the Mississippi River, Oak Grove, the ancestral home of the Malcolm family, symbolizes their courage, resilience, and strength. The reader will fall in love with the intriguing story of Laura who overcomes personal tragedy, and is forced to hide a secret that, if revealed, will cause her great heartache. Amidst the revitalized social scene of a recovering South, Laura has to sacrifice one of her most precious desires in order to protect someone she loves above all else. Can Laura make her enemies become allies as she confronts her secret and finds the strength to forgive as well as to love again?
About the Author
Ann Mock’s first novel, “The Union of the North and the South,” won honorable mention in Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest for Romance-Christian and received five-star recognition by Readers’ Favorite. She lives in Florida with her husband Dave. She enjoys ballroom dancing and cruising on rivers and oceans in Europe and the United States. Some of her favorite trips were on a Mississippi steamboat which visited sites that inspired her in the writing of this novel.
Author Ann Mock contacted me, asking if I would review her beautiful novel. It is set in the old south, Vicksburg, Mississippi. This story takes the reader to a time when life was simple, pure, and kind. The plot begins in the years just following the Civil War.
I fell in love with the character of Laura. She is strong, bold, and becomes the head of her home once her husband, and then father, dies. Her young marriage is annulled by her in-laws upon her husband’s death, but not before her husband gives her a gift which she must tuck away from the outside world. Her father’s passing rips their lives from affluence to poverty with a signature by a man who claims he loves Laura.
The resilience of Laura’s life is inspiring in a story where nothing is quite what it seems. Her unknowing search for romance, for eternal love, causes the reader to continually long for the same in her life.
Filled with suspense, romance, and adventure, this charming story, The Union of the North and the South, will capture your heart. I look forward to reading more from Ann Mock, an author who brings the South to life.
